Can I use my personal WhatsApp number for the API?
Technically yes — but you must delete your personal WhatsApp account first before registering on the API. Once a number is on WhatsApp Business API, it cannot run the regular WhatsApp app simultaneously. For this reason, using your personal number is strongly discouraged. Get a dedicated business number.
What happens to my WhatsApp data if I migrate my number to the API?
When you delete your existing WhatsApp account to register on the API, WhatsApp retains your message history for 30 days on their servers. After 30 days, it's permanently deleted. Download a backup before deleting if you need any conversation history.
Can I use a toll-free 1800 number for WhatsApp Business API?
Yes — toll-free numbers work well for WhatsApp API in India. They look professional and are memorable (1800-XXX-XXXX format). OTP verification is done via voice call (Meta calls the number and asks you to press 1). Ensure your toll-free number can receive inbound calls during the verification window.
What display name should I use for my WhatsApp Business number?
Use your registered business name or a widely recognised brand name. Meta rejects display names that: are too generic (e.g., 'Store'), impersonate another business, contain special characters or emojis, or don't match your Meta Business Manager business name. Keep it clear, professional, and consistent with your other marketing.
