Trigger automations from a Google Sheet column change

You can trigger a WA.Expert automation whenever a specific column in a Google Sheet changes — for example, when a status column is updated to "Approved", automatically send the customer a WhatsApp message. This is done using a Google Apps Script that watches for edits and calls your automation webhook.

Common use cases

Send a WhatsApp when a lead's status is updated in a sheet, notify a customer when their order status changes, trigger a follow-up message when a form response column is marked complete.

Set up the trigger

Create or open the Google Sheet you want to monitor.

In WA.Expert Automation Builder, create a new workflow and add a trigger: Webhook → Custom Webhook. Copy the webhook URL.

In your Google Sheet, go to Extensions → Apps Script.

Paste the trigger script (available at the link in the video description). Replace the monitored column number and the automation webhook URL with your values.

Save the script.

In the script editor, go to Triggers → Add Trigger. Set the function to run on onEdit, select your Gmail account, and authorise access when prompted.

Back in WA.Expert, click Capture Incoming Webhook in your automation to put it in test mode.

Update the monitored column in your Google Sheet to test. Verify the data arrives in the Automation Builder capture view.

Build out the rest of your automation — add a time delay, a CRM Send Template Message block, or any other steps you need.

Save and enable the automation.
Triggering on all or selected rows

To trigger an automation for all rows or selected rows in a sheet (not just on column change), use the Google Sheets rows trigger instead. See the Google Sheets data guides in the Bot Builder section.
